The Ken Febrary 13

The Ken February 13, 2017

Attendance: Bill Brucker

Split Club: Jim Prichard

Invocation: Tom Lang

Fine Master: Paul Chisolm

Mike started our light crowd out with the Pledge. Mike took one look at our crowd and didn’t want to attempt a song. Tom Lang asked that we give a moment silence in honor of St. Valentine’s Day to reflect on all our loved ones who are no longer with us.

Tom also is putting the final touch on our great mid-winter social event. Again, this will be a tour of the Niagara Wine Region. Limo bus leaves Jovi’s 11:00 am March 5. Signup sheets are at the meetings or notify Tom. Mike reminded us to start pushing our 14th annual Wine Event. This is one of our larger events of the year so please look to see how you can support it. There are brochures available to hang in you windows at work. I can email you the pdf if you want to print one out. There has been an event created on our website to download the registration form. There is a glitch that is being worked out tomorrow so you can register on the website.  Rick Graham chimed in that we depend on sponsorships from our members and those trends have been going down. He suggested we ask our vendors to help support this.

Paul Chisolm took over as Finemaster. Confessions were first heard from Tim Glor. Tim and Jacquie vacationed in the Dominican Republic recently. Also, Tim’s son took a job in FLA with Ernst and Young therefor leaving the teat. Brian warned us that his sour dough bread today was “Adventurous Souls”. One of the ingredients is cricket flour. Go figure, must be the protein. I bragged about Jeffrey’s trip out west. The Lake Erie shipping lanes are closed for the winter so Jeffrey and 2 of his friends are skiing all over the continent. They are living in tents. His friend’s dad just treated them to heli-skiing in British Columbia. I am of course nervous for him but proud of the task. Tom Lang thanked Jim for taking him to the Hockey game and something came up about a sausage and a beer. Mike asked if stamps would be an appropriate Valentine’s Day present. I suggested a brand, stamps might come off in the shower. Paul Fined Tom additionally for assuming men would prefer steak over sea bass. Paul gave President Lincoln trivia and it was very interesting.

Jim Logan won the 50 / 50 and Jim Prichard drew his own number but missed the Ace. Joe Starck won the Adventurous soul bread.

Paul introduced our program. Rick Hillman and his dad’s friend Mike gave a tremendous program about the Buffalo River. They touched on the value of our grain elevators. The elevators were essential for the well-being of our nation. So much so that the United States Armen Forces guarded them. Buffalo processed more immigration than Ellis Island. I really need to verify that before I use that at the next cocktail party. If true, which I am sure it is, puts it all in perspective. Rick and his dad own many of the boats that adorns our waterfront. The Spirit of Buffalo, River Queen and Harbor Queen to name a few. They give tours for all types of events. According to trip advisor, The Spirit of Buffalo and Buffalo and Buffalo River History are consistently ranked top things to do in Buffalo. Another great program that went over and no one cared.

Meeting adjourned

The Ken January 9, 2017

Attendance: Barb Henry

Split Club: Donna Di Francesco

Invocation: John Coogan

Fine Master: Tom Lang

The Ken: Jeff Markarian

Mike began our meeting with the Pledge, Barb led us in “America” and John Coogan gave our invocation. Please remember Shari McDonough’s family as her father Jerome McDonough passed away. And please keep John Riordan in our prayers as he is struggling with a 1 in million immune deficient disease.

Guests today were David Evans from Niagara County Rotary Club and our speaker Althea Luehrsen with Leadership Buffalo.

Mike announced that there will be a board meeting at Palatka’s, Wednesday at 8:00 am. Audrey is having the first wine tasting event planning meeting 1/24, 5:30 at Jovi’s. Holly is emailing me the details about an HR event she is involved in at Helium Comedy Club. I’ll be sure to send it out so we can support her. Dawn Mirand will retire this week. She is confident in the progress she has made with our school district. I have updated her new email address in our roster. Dawn has many things to keep her busy. Larry Coon is looking for volunteers at the end of January for the Interacts “purple pinky” event. Larry please forward me the details. Remember, Rotary matches Interacts money raised and The Bill and Malinda Gates Foundation will double match Rotary’s contribution. Sue Jandzinski announced the Kenmore Mercy Foundation received $100 K from the medical staff.

Tom Lang stood in as Finemaster. Tom immediately fined Paul…for being Paul. Audrey tried to persuade Tom by mentioning how much she likes Tom as the Finemaster. John Coogan is a grandfather again. His son had a baby last week. All is well, no fine for grandchild but a heavy fine for a new Jaguar in the parking lot. Brian mentioned his bread was not auction worthy. I confessed to banging the corners of the Virgin Islands. Tom blushed and didn’t much recover. After confessions, Tom allowed us to share what we did for New Year’s Eve.

Ron Levea won the split club and I drew the Ace of Spades for the second time in row.

At this time, Brian introduced our speaker Althea Luehrsen from Leadership Buffalo. Making Buffalo Better. They are a non-profit organization founded in 1987. Their mission is to unite existing and emerging leaders from diverse backgrounds and perspectives in order to increase their knowledge of community issues, broaden their vision and enhance their ability to lead. Althea left us with applications if we want to participate.

The Ken - December 19
The Ken December 19, 2016
Attendance: Barb Henry
Split Club: Michaelene Bernat
Invocation: Chuck Patterson
Fine Master: Mike Ford
The Ken: Jeff Markarian
Mike began our meeting with the Pledge, Barb led us in “God Bless America” and Chuck Patterson gave our invocation. Guests today were new applicant George Allen and our speaker Jack O’Connor.
Announcements. No meeting for the next 2 Mondays. Operation Santa toys are at Paul’s office. Please keep John Riordan in our thoughts as he is still battling for recovery.
Paul made a motion to accept the slate of officers previously published. Chuck Patterson 2nd the volte. They were accepted unanimously. Jim Prichard made a motion to cast 1 ballet, seconded by Art Traver. Motion passed.
Fine master Mike Ford sheepishly took the podium as fine master because he ravished us last week for the Kenmore Rotary record for most fines levied. Ted P confessed to being sentimental in the room we had the Christmas party in at the Park because he had is wedding there, and on December 28 he will surprise Janel with a party for their anniversary. Jim Prichard thanked the rug rat for lending the Riviera a rug for the Rick Springfield concert. Mike fined Audrey for getting many more “likes” on a picture of her on facebook than Paul got on a picture of him. Now, let’s be honest, who would you rather look at?
Jim Auctioned 2 sets of tickets to “The Pirates of Penzance” donated back to the club by Mike Ford. Art Traver and Paul battled for them, each buying a set. Thanks guys.
I didn’t get who won the raffle but Art won the chance for the Ace but missed and also won the drawing for a loaf of Brian’s bread.
Gary introduced a friend of his, Jack O’Connor. Jack volunteers his time for the Buffalo Veterans Court. Gary is a veteran of the Vietnam War. So many of our vets from Afghanistan, Iraq and even still Vietnam struggle from the aftermaths of what they have been exposed to. When they get in trouble often times they are sent straight to jail. Judge Russell and Jack O’Conner understand that doesn’t help them. They came up with a strategy as to when the Veterans get arrested they are asked if they are Veterans. If so the arresting officer indicates that. They are placed into 1 of 28 cells, freshly painted and cleaned up by Veteran volunteers. Once placed in the cell, Jack or a member of their team visits them and gets them into the program. Judge Russel will hear their case. Instead of sending them to jail. Judge Russel gets them into counseling. The Buffalo Veterans Treatment Court is a hybrid drug and mental health court that serves veterans who are struggling with addiction and / or mental illness by diverting them from the traditional criminal justice system into a specialized veteran’s court.
It is a collaborative effort among the Western New York (WNY) Veterans Project, Buffalo Police Department, Buffalo Veteran’s Administration Health Care System, Buffalo Criminal Courts, Buffalo Drug and Mental Health Treatment Courts, Erie County Pre-trial Services and the C.O.U.R.T.S  Program (Court Outreach Unit Referral and Treatment Service), and the Buffalo Veteran Mentor Group (a separate nonprofit organization). In most cases they stay with the program. Judge Russell has sent over 4,000 to ECC.
Another great presentation.
Meeting Adjourned.
The Ken November 14
The Ken November 14, 2016
Attendance: Ron Levea
Split Club: Tim Glor
Invocation: Tim Glor

Jovi’s broke with tradition and served hamburger and fries for lunch today. We started the meeting on time with the Pledge followed by “America” helped out be Barb. Tim Glor was double duty today and gave our invocation. Guests today were Donna Fernandes and Ted Pietrzak from the zoo, Tony Billoni from Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus and prospective new member George Allan.
First announcement was from Tony Billoni. Tony came to advertise the Rotary Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus is having their chili bowl January 29 from 2-5. Visit them at www.rotarybnmc.org for all the details. Tom Lang will have a signup sheet for the Christmas party at our front desk the next few meetings. Tom still needs auction items. Tom also has a signup sheet for operation Santa Claus. This is to take a family. And finally, Tom is looking for a late February date for a Niagara Wine Region tour.  Rick Graham announced there is only 2 more weeks to get the grant requests in for our foundation.
Eddie was our fine master today. Tom Lang and Jim Prichard were Audrey’s guest in the Evans Bank box to watch the Sabres game. Mike A, met up with them before the game. At one point, Audrey texted Mike to save her. Pat confessed to being at the game with Larry Coon. Ed did not fine Pat but charged him for taking some of his fries. Brian Ahern played 108 holes of golf in Scottsdale. Brian is going to get me some information of an event for veterans Pat is working on with Hospice. I’ll be sure to email everybody. With no further confessions, Eddie quizzed us on Buffalo Zoo questions.

Jim Prichard won the split club and Ed Hackeral missed on the Ace.
Eddie introduced Donna Fernandes, the curator for the Buffalo Zoo, 3 or 4 curators removed from Marlin Perkins. Donna has spoken to us before as the zoo takes on new projects. The project they are involved in now is the new Amphibian and Reptile Center. They want to keep the existing footprint; terrazzo floors, brick walls and brass railing. But need to have independent pods for each species they have. Currently, the same boiler handles the whole building. Please visit their website to keep up with all the great tings the zoo is doing.

Attendance: Ron Levea
Split Club: Holly Nowak
Invocation: Jim Prichard
Fine Master: Ed Markarian
The Ken: Jeff Markarian
Mike began our meeting with the Pledge, Barb led us in “God Bless America” and Jim Prichard gave our Calming invocation. A big welcome back to Tim Glor who seems to be mending well. Tim announced that he proposed to Jacquie and she accepted. Tim and Jacquie are looking forward to a summer wedding.
Our quests today were Douglas Love and his associate Jeanine Tramont, Marks sister-in-law, from Explore & More. More on that latter.
Tom Lang is asking for gifts to raffle off at the Christmas Party. Dinner and shows / events are real popular items to peddle. Rick Graham is still taking requests for grants from our Foundation.
With no further announcements, Eddie took the floor as November Finemaster. Tom Lang was his first victim because he sighed when Eddie took the floor. Eddie next fell on his sword by fining himself for paying last week’s fine with a check from an abandoned bank. I confessed to Emily’s winning the Empire 8 Conference in field hockey at St. John Fisher and that Emmie was the MVP. Off to Boston for the NCAA sweet 16. I’ll keep you posted. Pat was fined for picking on Tom (Linda honest, he wasn’t doing nothing). Mike confessed to his 5 year old daughter winning a Cheerleading contest. Gary was fined for such a clean car. Holly confessed to a great year. One year in her new business, a new car, she just got back from Las Vegas, picked up 3 new clients. However, on the way back from Vegas someone was coughing near her and she picked up their cold. Tim thanked everyone for the kind thoughts during his recovery. Mike Ford was a tad bummed when his son took a liking to St. Bonaventure instead of his alma mater Canisius. Eddie fined himself again for his brother Billie getting a WATTY. This is a writers contest on the medium of Youtube. WTG.
The split Club was won by Tim Glor and Ed missed the Ace.
At this time, Mike introduced Douglas Love. Douglas moved from LA to Buffalo about a year ago and finds it to be a very welcoming town. Doug is the CEO of Explore and More, www.exploeandmore.org. Explore and More is a children’s museum founded in 1994. The museum is based in East Arora but will be moving into a 43 thousand square foot museum at Canalside in 2018. They believe happy curiosity is the hallmark of childhood. It’s a belief that makes us ask a question: What can a museum be. It can be a place where learning feels like playing – “where do not touch” becomes “try it out”. All the play zones will be about Buffalo.
Another great program.

The Ken July 25

Attendance: Pat Griffin

Split Club: Michalene Bernat

Invocation: Gary Roberts

Fine Master: Ted Purvis

Mike started our large, rowdy group off today at 12:41. Mike was styling with his new specs. Good look buddy. We gave our Pledge and changed things up a little with Gary again asking for our prayers for more compassion and peace throughout the world. Then Chuck Patterson led us singing “America”

Guests today were Holly Mergenhagen, Esq., our speaker with Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo. Dr. Werner with his daughters Sue and Karen. RYLArians, Brian Markarian and Stacy Rogers. And our friend from Buffalo Rotary, Mike Ryan.

Announcements: No meeting next week because we will meet Tuesday instead for the Presidents BBQ and swearing in of the new officers. We are only up to 24. The dead line for RSVP is Thursday 7/28. Chuck Patterson needs to know who will be attending lunch for Cradle Beach Sunshine Day 8/17. Trust me. Not a bad lunch, overlooking Lake Erie. Last year we cooled down after lunch with a stroll in the surf, before the camp started. Tom Lang announced Thursday 7/28 will be a Happy Hour at Jovi’s at 6:00. Light fare included. Bring a friend to show off how fun we are. Networking extraordinaire, Gary Roberts will buy any guest their first drink (don’t worry Gary, Art said you can expense it). Tom also announced that he is closing in on securing the Moon Dance sail ride for either a Tuesday or Thursday. Details to follow. Mike Austin challenged us to fill his car. The Ken Ton closets clothing drive is on. Bring a garbage bag of used clothing to the Party or the following meeting.

Ted Purvis, our fine master took the floor. Ted took confessions from Jim Prichard who went camping with the family (or at least that’s what I thought I heard. Joe Stark was talking so I couldn’t hear it), Mike Austin did a stay-cation, but did get a Pittsburg Pirates game in. Damon Piatek went to Myrtle Beach. Art confessed to hearing his sump pump working for the first time in a long while. Ted went through the tables testing our football knowledge in preparation for the upcoming season.

Brian Markarian picked his own number for the 50/50 and Rene missed on the Ace of Spades.

Larry Coon introduced Stacy Rogers and my son Brian. Stacy and Brian thanked us for sending them to RYLA. They set up a slide show to show the activities they were involved in. Lots of team building and heart felt bonding was achieved throughout the week. Please mark in you calendars to sign someone up you know that qualifies. The applications are on our website. This is another fantastic perk you get by being a Rotarian.

Mike tried to introduce our guest, Molly Mergenhagen from Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo. However, Molly asked if she could introduce herself. Molly studied law at UB. After graduation she got involved with the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo. Their mission is to connect people, ideas and resources to improve lives in WNY. This is a 501©3 public charity dedicated to helping donors make the most of their generosity. To learn more, the website is www. CFGB.org. Molly kept trying to conclude her program on time but Pat kept asking questions. I finally had to tell him to stop asking so many questions.

Meeting adjourned.

Attendance: Audrey Meyers
Split Club: Sue Jandzinski
Invocation: John Coogan
Fine Master: Paul Chisholm
The Ken: Jeff Markarian
Tom Lang stepped in for Mike today and started our meeting a tad early. We said the Pledge, Bryden headed us in singing “God Bless America” and John Coogan gave a wonderful invocation without any previous notice he was to do it.
Visitors today were John Dunn, an Elderwood administrator, Joe DiPaulo from Buffalo Rotary, Dr. Werner with Donna and our guest speaker, Jim Millard.
Announcements today: Tom Lang is lining up a couples event sailing on the Moon dance for the end of August. Moon Dance is a Buffalo Harbor cruise on a catamaran. It enables you to see the sky line of Buffalo. Tom was asking if anyone could help man the eighth hole at Sheridan after our meeting for the hole in one contest. I think there were some takers. Bryden asked us to be thinking of charities that would be interested in our contributions. The application forms are on our website. Holly keeps pushing Sunshine Day at Cradle Beach August 17. Newer member Brian Ahern asked what this was. This is a hands on project where we go to Cradle Beach Camp for the underprivileged and handicapped children. We set up games, have horse rides and a dunk tank. We play with these kids for 2 hours. It means a lot to them. They get tickets they can turn in for candy and other prizes .For some of these children, this is the only time they get out of their homes. Let’s all support this. Final announcement was from Brian who is hosting the Presidents picnic August 2. We are up to 24 people. Please RSVP by 7/28.
Paul Chisolm was the fine master today. First were confessions. Brian confessed he just didn’t want to get up early and play golf with Paul. Mike Ford played in the Fallen Warriors football tournament. He lost in the last second. Way to go Mike. Paul fined everyone without a pin on. Tom Lang was fined for mocking Paul. Mark Tramont paid for not being around much. Ted was fined because he tried to sit at another table. John Coogan would have been fined, but because he stepped in for the invocation, the fine was waived. Paul proceeded to test us on our Buffalo trivia.
The split club was won by Rick Graham and Jim Logan missed on the Ace of spades.
At this time Tom introduced Jim Millard, president and CEO of Kenmore Mercy Hospital. In 1941 Reverend Tim Ring and Dr. Stedemamm asked the Sisters of Mercy to raise money for a hospital. Sister Matilda and her friends went door to door and held fund raisers to create the capital nesseccary. In 1951, Kenmore Mercy Hospital was opened. The hospital did many upgrades through the ‘60’s, ‘70’s not so much in the ‘80’s, and more in the ‘90’s. In 1998, Bishop Mansell urged all the Catholic hospitals to merge into the Catholic Healthy System. This year they added a new ambulatory center. They are working on a new recovery room. Later this year they will make renovations to the lobby. Next year, a new MRI center will be created where the old ambulatory unit was. 2013 they opened a Tim Hortons in the hospital. All hospitals need to be ready for any catastrophic event, which Kenmore Mercy is. Health Grades rates hospitals and ranks Kenmore Mercy in the top 100.
Jim gave an informative talk that held our attention right up to 1:30. Jim’s charitable contribution will be Kenmore Mercy Foundation. Sue J made certain of that.
Meeting adjourned.

Attendance: Pat Griffin in for ?

Split Club: Audrey in for ?The Ken – July 11

Invocation: Gary Roberts

Finemaster: Tom Lang

The Ken: Jeff Markarian

Mike Austin started his first Rotary meeting promptly after we all made tacos for lunch. We said the Pledge and Barb led us in “God Bless America”. Gary asked for a moment of silence in hope that we all find a peaceful ending to all the recent violence.

Mike gave a special welcome to Harold. Harold’s son takes off on Mondays so he and Harold spend the day together. Harold thought if his son would join Rotary, he could do both at the same time.

Announcements were next. There will be a board meeting this week at Plaka’s. You will be notified. Holly started getting us ready for Sunshine Day at Cradle Beach 8/17. Lunch and set up 12:00 – 2:00, games 2:00 – 4:00. Bring any one that wants to help man the games. This is a great way for High School kids to accumulate community service hours. The dunk tank is ordered, Pat is looking into the horses.

Mike passed around a signup sheet to cover the table for the hole in one contest at Sheridan next Monday.

Tom Lang announced the date for the Christmas party will be 12/ 9. Auction items will be needed. An event followed by dinner is always a good auction item. Tom also mentioned the next happy hour will be 7/28 at Jovi’s at 5:30. Light fare will be served. The social committee is trying to stimulate some ways to get us together in a more informal matter. Rotary International has adjusted their attendance requirements so these gatherings will be counted as a meeting. Please bring guests or potential members.

Gary Roberts reported on the success of the fireworks picnic. He said Jennifer and Mark did a great job with the food.

Scott Mason reminded us Shred – It is 10/1 and 4/22/17, 10:00-2:00.

Mike received an email update from Brian on the Inaugural party at his house. He has 24 confirmations. 2 have paid. Please pay.

Ron Levea won $13 split club and Holly Nowak missed the chance for the big pot.

Tom Lang filled in as fine master and thanked Audrey and Pat for filling in at the table. Tom took confessions from Harold for missing meetings to be with his son. Tom wanted to thank John Riordan and John Coogan for their terms on the board and thanked Ted Pervis and Ed Hackerl for stepping up to the plate to serve our club. Art blew in Jim Logan on his purchase of a new Cadillac and John Coogan for buying a new Jaguar. Neither were in attendance so they will be fined when they return. Tom fined Art for being a rat.

Tom had some fun brain teasers he tested on us. Some were answered correctly but most were not.

Mike passed out the committee lists and the duties list. I will attach a PDF to this document. Please look them over and mark your calendars as to when you are to produce. The budget is the same as last year. Mike has given a lot of thought for the club to perform several service projects for the causes in the Town. He will like to do something each quarter. The first project will be with Ken Ton closets (www.kentoncloset.org). Jill O’Malley presented to us a couple of weeks ago. The need any clothing you may be able to give. Please fill a garbage bag and we will get them to Ken Ton Closets. They cannot accept sox or underwear so if you can purchase new or give Ken Ton Closets a check for them to purchase new. The money would also be used to spend on school supplies. Mike will arrange a delivery time. Easiest is if you can drop off at Elmlawn. Mike can store them in the basement there. If you have to bring them to a meeting you can but try to get them to Mike. Rick Graham reminded us to get some publicity out of it also.

Tom took the floor again and talked about some couples events. A group sail on Moon dance. I suggested perhaps a Wednesday evening so we can watch the sailboats race. The Darwin Martin House, tour of local wineries and an event at the Riviera. All in attendance were positive to any of these.

Other comments were from Audrey. She suggested we have someone work on retaining members. Rick Graham said that the membership committee has that as part of their agenda. Ed wanted to know how many years Dr. Werner has perfect attendance. 59. And lastly, Larry asked if we can publish the upcoming speakers with their topics and even their website so if there is a potential guest that might be interested in the topic that we could invite them.

With no further business, meeting adjourned. Please look for the attachments to the Duties list and BBQ details

The Ken - July 27
June 27, 2016 Meeting @ Jovi’s
Attendance: Michaelene Bernat
Spilt Club: Shari McDonough
Invocation: John Coogan
Finemaster: Rick Graham
The Ken: Audrey Meyers
President Paul began the meeting promptly at 12:30pm (He must have been trying to impress Nancy because that hasn’t happened in two years).  After we said the pledge and sang, John Coogan led our invocation.
The following was announced:
  • Brian announced the Incoming / Outgoing Officers party on August 2nd.  It will be at his house.  Please get in your reservations and payments.  There will be food and wine provided.
  • Ken Weinstein announced a classic car show on July 24, 2016 from 10am – 4pm. At the Northtown Center at Amherst (1615 Amherst Manor Dr., Amherst, NY 14221.  Over 100+ Awards will be given.  Pre-registration $13, Day of $15.
  • Gary announced that the Town of Tonawanda will have a fireworks display on July 3rd.  Elmlawn will be having a private party for Rotarian families and friends.  Cost is $20 per person.   Food will be provided but bring your own beverages and chairs.  You will need one car pass to enter per car and can enter at the Brighton Entrance only.  Contact Mike Austin if you need another pass.
Before asking for confessions, Rick pointed out that Larry was late and should be fined.  Barb confessed that she was so proud of outgoing President Paul for all of the new members he brought into the club during his two years.  Larry confessed that he was so happy to see John Riordan’s maroon car in the parking lot when he arrived (we missed you John)!  Audrey confessed to being in Puerto Rico for a week.
Finemaster asked questions about incoming Rotarian Officers on the district and international level, along with some other trivia.  He ended his questioning at every table with the phrase “Ok cough up some money”.
Rick won the split club and Michaelene had her shot at the Ace of Spades but pulled the 9 of hearts L
Incoming President Mike thanked Outgoing President Paul for his leadership and gave him a bottle of Scotch (the good stuff!).  He also gave the First Lady (Nancy) a nice bouquet of flowers.  The whole room stood in applause to recognize all of Paul’s work over the past two years…. Well done!
Duncan Tenner from Boyscouts was our speaker.  He has visited many Rotary Clubs and is a fellow Rotarian himself and is astonished at the comrodery that exists at each club.  He was amazed at how many new members Paul was able to recruit over the past two years.  Duncan drew similarities between Boy Scouts and Rotarians.  He talked of the importance of service clubs / organizations and how sad it is that they are dwindling.  He talked about how the millennium generation is suffering from not getting involved and it’s apparent that many only learn to care about self and forget about service.  He talked a bit about the history of Boy Scouts and how they began as far back as 1910.  He thanked our club for all of the support we have contributed over the past few years (we’ve given $12k since 2014!).  Duncan thanked Bob Blatz and Dick Hanaburgh for all of their hard work to keep the relationship strong between Boy Scouts and Rotary.  Dick spoke a bit about where our donated funds have gone within the Greater Niagara Frontier Council and talked about how they are trend setters and national is watching what they are doing.  He also talked about the impact Boy Scouts honors can have on your career path and how it is proven to stand out if you have Eagle Scout on your resume.  Dick also shared with us his personal Eagle Scout project, which was setting up a campfire program that is still used in his hometown today.  Great program and Rotary is happy to support our local Scouts!

The Ken – June 20, 2016
Paul started our meeting a tad early today. We said the Pledge and Chuck led us in “God Bless America”. John Coogan gave an inspiring invocation. I announced our guests for today, Bob Werner (honorary member) back from Florida, AJ Block and Brendon Blatz representing the Boy Scouts and our guest speaker Pat Whalen with the Niagara Global Tourism Institute.
Announcements: first from Mike Austin. Mike is massaging the details for the 4th of July Party at Elmlawn. A flier will be sent out. He said he is working on an adult bounce house. Jim Prichard announced that his email was hacked and obviously not to open it. Dick Hanaburgh is selling the Scouts Golf Outing Monday August 29th at Lancaster Country Club and Sporting Clays Invitational, September at the Tonawanda Sportsman’s. Please visit their website for the details wnyscouting.org. Mike Ford gave a final push for Elderwood’s Golf Outing at Glen Oaks, Monday 6/27.   And finally Chuck Patterson reminded us of the party at Brian Ahern’s house August 2 honoring outgoing President Paul and welcoming incoming President Mike Austin.
Mike Austin approached the podium to give out fines and to hear confessions. Mike first confessed to going to the Salvation Army golf outing 1 week early. He then thanked Bryden for a wonderful time golfing the actual day it was held. He was concerned that we might get arrested for Mike Ford’s errant shots. And they were extreme. So much that I put a helmet on. However, Mike F. did refuse to accept a very lucrative 50/50 split he won. That was an admirable act and represented Rotary well. I then confessed that my son Brian had a great week at RYLA. He was extremely anxious to go, however with the nurturing of Char and Larry, and the whole RYLA environment, Brian had a wonderful time. Jim Prichard and Ted Purvis, coincidentally, both spent their wedding anniversaries in NYC. Visiting Rotarian AJ Block spent 5 of the last 5 days at Rotary meetings. Mike tested our hockey trivia in lei of the NHL draft being held here in Buffalo Friday and Saturday.
Joe Arcara won the split club and Rick Graham missed the drawing. The pot is growing and the cards are fewer so buy more chances next week.
Paul introduced our speaker Pat Whalen. Pat spoke to us several years ago when he was with The Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus. Pat is now the interim director of the Niagara Global Tourism Institute. The NGTI is a Niagara University-led initiative that seeks to leverage research and development to transform the regions travel and tourism industry. A real challenge for Pat is how to attract tourism in the region during 6 winter months. The other 6 months is fully occupied. Banks need 50% equity before they fund any project. He is the interim director, but I’m sure the job is his if he wants it. Pat is a dynamic leader that has great insight with these projects. To learn more, contact the assistant director Roscoe Naguit at rnaguit@niagara.edu. Another great program
Meeting adjourned.
The Ken - June 13

Hello All,
The Ken is below for your approval and upload....

Attendance: Pat Griffin      Invocation: John Coogan
Finemaster: Jim Logan      Split Club: Audrey Meyers

Marketing Tech can also do automated marketing.  This type of marketing is not the future anymore, it's the here and now.  Automated marketing includes print, email, website, text, and they all drive traffic to each other.  Automated marketing is surprisingly inexpensive compared to the other marketing forms.  You also get reporting on automated marketing as well.

Marketing Tech feels they are different from their competitors because the focus on getting it right the first time, customer service is unbeatable, and they have cloud based technology so they can access client info even when traveling.  Marketing Tech can support companies all over the world.

The Ken - June 6
Meeting Monday 6/6/2016 @ Jovi’s
Attendance Pat Griffin                                  Split Club / The Ken Audrey Meyers
Invocation / Fine Master Gary Roberts

President Paul began the meeting at 12:40 PM.  During the Invocation, Gary had a moment of silence for the remembrance of Rotarian Ed Hoffman.

Fine Master Gary immediately fined President Paul for not sharing pie at Park Country Club and a whole slew of other atrocities.  Pat Griffin confessed to throwing the first pitch at the Bison’s Game on  Thursday night (he says he made it to home plate).  Mike Ford confessed to not screaming on a ride with his kid.  Bryden Swires confessed that he and his wife were both promoted to Captain.  Ron met Henry Winkler.  Gary moved on to fines after confessions.  He asked a bunch of questions about Buffalo Mayors… No one knew or cared what the answers were.

Bryden won the split club and Art took a shot at the Ace of Spades (he pulled the wrong Ace).
Larry coon was our speaker today and he presented on RYLA.  Anyone who knows Larry understands his passion for RYLA.  RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award) is a one week training retreat for young people ages 19-25 that takes place at Fredonia State.  RYLA has been active since 1960.  At the retreat, the participants learn business skills, human relations, how to be a responsible business person, how to participate in community service projects, have fun and make friends.  Rotarians can volunteer to help bridge the age gap and share expertise and help cultivate future Rotary memberships.
There are still available spots this year if anyone knows of a young person that might be interested.  Larry can help connect the candidate with a sponsoring club.  Our Kenmore Rotary Club usually sponsors two spots.  This year we are sponsoring Jeff Markarian’s son and Stacey Rodgers (who has helped us with Sunshine Day, Shred it Events, and the Anti-Bullying Seminar).  Pat Griffin’s nephew Christopher is also attending thanks to the Buffalo Rotary Club Sponsorship.

Larry and Char usually help and participate in running the retreat throughout the week.  They stay with a fellow committee member at his condo.  Larry’s favorite part is seeing the growth and results amongst the Rylarians.  “You can see the unbreakable bond between them by the end of the week” said Larry.
At the end of the week, the Rylarians are given an evaluation form.  Some of the comments on the form were:
  • Enjoyed the freedom to work one on one with other participants
  • No one was judging me
  • Love the friends I’ve made
  • Love the speak ups (a chance to speak about hardships they’ve experienced)
  •
Some students shared they learned confidence, communication skills, listening skills, leadership, and  how to work with other personality types.

All Rotarians are welcome to join the Rylarians on Thursday night during the retreat at Fredonia for a Rotary meeting that the Rylarians are responsible for providing the entertainment for.  It is usually a celebratory night that involves the parents as well.  If you’re interested in attending this year’s, it is June 16, 2016.  Please contact Larry for details.
Joe Starck spoke up after Larry’s presentation and announced on behalf of our club that we are all very proud of Larry for what he does with the community youth and RYLA.  Everyone agreed and thanked Larry for all he has done with RYLA.

The Ken - May 23
Attendance: Scott Mason
Split Club: Bob Blatz
Invocation: Rick Graham
Finemaster: Joe Arcara
Ken: Jeff Markarian
The Ken 5/23/16
We had a late start to the lunch today but Paul was able to make up the time and move the meeting along. After the Pledge, Bryden led us in singing “America” followed by our invocation given by Rick Graham. Scott Mason introduced our speakers. They were; The Eminger family, Char Coon (our wonderful Rotary Anne), pass member Bill Holler, Andrea Scibetta from the Buffalo Niagara Medical Club, our guest, Jen Middleton and her friend Paul Frasier.
Joe Arcara announced that the Installation of new officer’s event will be held at Brian Ahern’s house August 11. Details to follow. Audrey passed along a card for us to sign congratulating Shari for graduating with her Bachelor’s degree in business. Gary Roberts thought it was a GED. Audrey will have a meeting of the Wine Committee wrap up. Lastly, Audrey announced that she will give a seminar for first time home buyers at her church Thursday, 5/26/16 at 6:00. The address is Riverside Baptist Church, 346 Ontario Street, Buffalo, NY. Please RSVP Audrey if you can attend abaker616822yahoo.com.
At this time, Paul asked Greg Eminger to present a $750 scholarship award to his daughter Hannah. We all know Hannah and all her accomplishments with Interact and Slap Shot. Larry added to Hannah’s achievements and Hannah thanked us.
Finemaster Joe Arcara stepped in for Ted Purvis and took confessions. I confessed that my son Brian graduated from St. Bonaventure and is off to RYLA. Jim Prichard had a record crowd of 3,000 for an event at the Riviera. Jim, you really put the Riv and the map buddy. Joe Arcara fined himself to brag that his 9 year old granddaughter came in third in the States. Rene and John Cogan can relate to that (past gymnasts). Mike Austin confessed that his kids didn’t do anything this weekend. Paul played golf all weekend even though it was his and Nancy’s 44th wedding anniversary. I said that I would love to have been there when he told her his plans. Joe fined anyone without a Rotary pin on (rookie move). Then Joe went through the room testing us on Buffalo trivia.
There was something peculiar about our start of the meeting. There was no split club and we started real late. Oh well, far be it for me to ask questions.
Larry re introduced Jen Middleton. Jen was a RYLA participant 10 years ago. Her mother forced her to fill out the application. It was the farthest thing from here desires of things to do. Well, it turned out to be a life altering event for her. She continued the projects they were all enthused about during the week camp. She was abscessed.  She organized school supplies to be shipped to Africa, she was instrumental in starting a Multiple Care Center. Hannah went to Africa a couple of times. She showed us slides of her trips. Her involvement brought her closer to her brother. She even was able to see the center that she helped build. At 1:40, my phone was blowing up so I had to adios. Don’t know what happed after that. I hope you’re not all still there.

The Ken May 9
Today we broke ranks and gathered at the Paddock Golf Dome for lunch in anticipation of a larger than normal attendance. We were honoring high achievers from the Ken – Ton Middle Schools. Most showed up with a parent or 2 and their Principals. And it goes without saying how proud you feel when you listen to their achievements.  Paul led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Paul then gave an overview as to what Rotary is and what we do. You can see the pride felt by our guests was equal to our achievements.
Paul introduced Tom Schwob. Tom presented the awards. Tom mentioned Rotary has been rewarding the students for 3 ½ decades. The recipients were as follows: Evan Haieck from Franklin Middle, Claire Bressette from Kenmore Middle. Clair is Tom Leous’ granddaughter. Madison Fox from Hoover Middle, Olivia Warrington from St. Johns and Thomas Struckman from St. Amelia’s. None of the students wanted to speak after their presentations. It will be fun to see what happens when Larry gets a hold of them in the Interact clubs once they get into High School. I’m sure we won’t be able to shut them up. Meeting was adjourned. Remember we will be back here 5/16 for the High School Scholarship presentations.
Lastly, a congratulations goes out to Ron Levea. Ron is our latest Paul Harris Inductee. WTG buddy.

The Ken May 2
We all gathered, had lunch and complied with our President as he began our meeting. We gave our Pledge followed by singing God Bless America. We sounded ok with the leadership of Barb and Bryden, but we still need Chuck Patterson to complete us. Rick Graham gave the invocation asking for special thoughts for the Hettler family. Sue’s dad, Allen Bagley was a fine Rotarian who recently passed away.
Our visitors were Demean Piatek, his last time eluding fines because next week he will be a member. And John Barcato, Ken-Ton deputy School Superintendent.
Announcements today were first from Audrey. The push is on. We need baskets, sponsors by the end of the week, people and payments. Also, they need help manning several stations that evening. A signup sheet was passed around.  It will cost less if you buy your tickets before the event. Scott Mason was having a final wrap up meeting after today’s meeting for Shred It. Jim Prichard announced the Riviera Theater is having their golf outing June, 6 at Tan Tara. Reach out to Jim for the details. Rick Graham was having a foundation meeting also after today’s meeting. Pat Griffin reminded us about the Rotary Training he and Larry are going to this week end in Niagara Falls. Paul confirmed the club will pay for it but to let him know. In conclusion, we will be meeting at the Paddock Golf Dome for the next 2 meetings for the scholarship presentations.
Ted Purvis was the fine master today. First were confessions. Eddie confessed to beating Larry as the last one here. However, Mark Tremont came in after Ed. Good to see Mark was able to make a meeting. Jim Prichard accepted an awarded on behalf of The Riviera Theater for The Organization of the Year. Tim Glor witnessed it. Vanessa Williams presented it. Jim said he dreamed about her all night. I mentioned I did not know Jim was a tennis fan. Sue J corrected me, wrong Vanessa. Mike Austin is friends on facebook with Jim and noticed many photos of Vanessa. Audrey confessed to rock climbing in Sedona, AZ. Ted then fined us all $5 in honor of Mother’s Day this Sunday.
I won the split club and John Coogan drew the Ace of diamonds.
At this time Paul introduced our own, Ken-Ton school Super Intendant Dawn Mirand. Dawn gave an over view of the budget of $157 million that was presented 4/12 and will be voted on 5/17 at Hoover Middle School between 7:00am – 9:00pm. It is a 1.23% increase. Which translates to $77 increase on a $100,000 home. They are applying for special funding due to the loss of revenue from the Huntley Plant. That should lower it to $68 per year. Dawn also touched on 4 propositions that will be voted on the same night. Proposition 1; the budget, Proposition 2; Bus purchase, Proposition 3; Capital Improvement Reserve Fund, Proposition 4; Student Ex officio board member. Dawn was a wonderful presenter. She chose the The Family Support Center.
Meeting adjourned.

The Ken April 25

Paul started our meeting right on time. Bryden led us in singing “God Bless America”. Tim Glor gave the invocation.

Visitors were Joe Alber from Buffalo and Joe Kane from Clarence. Tim Grant was a guest of Gary Roberts.

Announcements were from Eddie, thanking me and Gretchen for hosting the gift gathering party. It is always wonderful to see you all outside our normal venue. Ed is pitching the full court press for our Wine Tasting Event May 11. We need a push in all capacities: sponsors, baskets, and attendance. Paul reminded us that we can drop off the baskets at his office, 3849 Delaware Ave. He also is stressing the need for baskets. We have 11 now and need 40 total.

Joe Albers let us know that there is a Rotary Leadership training Assembly in Niagara Falls, NY May 7. The cost is $45 per Rotarian. Joe said usually the club pays for it, however Art choked and Paul followed up with “if you want to go, let him know and he’ll see what he can do”. Somehow I got the feeling that the issue has yet to be determined. Nevertheless it is a valuable event. Pat and Larry are in. I would go just to hang out with those guys but Retail Saturday keeps me grounded. All are welcome to attend and learn all aspects of Rotary. Register on our districts website www.rotary7090.org. Mike Ford announced that Elderwood is having Chefs food truck on the campus 4459 Bailey Ave. Wednesday 4/27 from 5:00- 7:00. Oops, that was yesterday. Sorry Mike.

Larry was our Finemaster and heard several confessions. Dick Hanaburgh and his lovely wife gave birth to their first child Niamh. Congratulations Hanaburgh’s. Bryden flew home from Phoenix. They had to stop over in Baltimore. When Bryden boarded the plane he realized he got the pilots discount at the food counter. Can I borrow you Salvation Army shirt next time I fly? He also saw Rex Ryan’s brot

her Rob on his flight. Michaelene Bernat was also traveling. They were in Tucson then to Maryland to watch her daughter get another academic achievement award. Larry fined himself for eating the entire week end on the Rotary dime. Larry and Char were in Canada for the Slap Shot retreat week end. They had a great time and I’m sure Rotary would gladly feed you and Char for all you do to engage the young future Rotarians. With that Larry had some fun with Rotary trivia.

The split Club was won by Jim Prichard and Michaelene missed on the chance for the Ace.

Paul introduced our speaker Rebecca Poynton. Rebecca is VP of marketing for Veraview. Veraview is a 16 year old company. They are comprised of engineers and developers. Veraview puts the proper technology in the right space. To learn more please visit their website at www.veraview.com

Meeting adjourned

Invocation: Tim Glor
The Ken – April 18, 2016
Paul started our meeting promptly after Jovi’s wonderful taco lunch. Bryden led us in signing God Bless America. Tim followed with a prayer. However, it was difficult for me to focus. Brian Ahern gave me a piping hot loaf of spouted purple barley sourdough bread with flax, pumpkin and sesame seeds. Thank you Brian. I will be your Ginny pig any time.
A very enthusiastic announcement was made by Scott Mason. He was real happy with the help he got from you Rotarians on Shred It. And the results showed it. Scott figures we made a profit of $7500. He gave a huge shout out to Barb Henry for coming up with the idea. And I must confess I was suspicious myself. Scott challenged the Wine Event for another great success. Scott wanted to give special thanks to Jim Prichard, Brian Ahern for the print outs and the social media blasts. Donna D. for her emails and to John Coogan, Paul Chisolm, Joe Arcara, Rick Graham, Larry Coon and I couldn’t keep up with all else he was thankful for. PS Eddie accepted the throw down.
Larry Coon asked for help getting the Slap Shot kids to their retreat just outside of Hamilton. I believe it was 2 kids and you need to leave around 2:00.
Larry was the fine master and took many confessions. Rick Graham won a basket at Watson’s grand opening. He will re gift it for the wine event. Holly confessed that she had a great time at Shred It. Ron Levea’s friend showed up the wrong day to help with Shred It. Pat predicted Cubs – Red Sox World Series. With that Bryden taunted that he will be going to Phoenix on vacation and is going to the Razorback / Pirates game. John Coogan had a Trump tie on. Joe Starck couldn’t make Shred It so he donated $5 to the Wine Event (go figure).  Larry continued with Music Trivia and raised lots of money.
Brian Ahern won the Split Club, Gary lost on the chance at the Ace of Spades. Gary sold the last few numbers of the Armenian Raffle so we could have the drawing. New member to be Damon Piatek won.
Paul welcomed Shari McDonough back. For those that are new to our club, Shari is a Kenmore Rotarian. She has been instrumental in getting our largest Fund Raiser, The Wine Tasting Event, to the level we are at now. She is a remarkable leader who is now using her talents to help the Boys and Girls Club of Buffalo. Kenmore Rotary supports this club. The Boys and Girls Club of Buffalo started by Buffalo Rotary in 1926. In 1986 they started to let Girls in. The Boys and Girls Clubs are a safe place to learn and grow – all while having fun. It is the place where great futures are started each and every day. Their P&L showed a negative $308,141 when Shari started almost a year ago. To this date they are positive $91,777. Great job.
Thank you for sharing with us today Shari.
Meeting adjourned.

President Paul called our meeting to order at 12:39.  After we pledged our allegiance to the flag Chuck Patterson led us in the singing of “God Bless America”.  Tim Glor gave the invocation.
Damon Piatek and our speaker Christina Schweitzer were introduced as guests.
Scott Mason announced that we are still looking for volunteers for Shred it which will be held on Saturday April 16th from 10:00 to 2:00 at Kenmore West High School.
Gary Roberts started the Armenian Raffle which features the raffling of a 32” TV.  Proceeds are to be used for our Wine Tasting Event.  Noticeably absent were any Armenians at today’s meeting.
Finemaster Larry Coon took a confession from Barb Henry that today is Harold White’s 92nd  birthday.  Happy birthday Harold!
Mike Austin noted that his tie closely matched the same tie worn by Rick Graham.  Brian Ahern confessed to a trip accompanied with a beautiful woman to Saratoga.  President Paul confessed to relying on his son’s Carl help in bringing a projector to the meeting.
Larry then quizzed our membership to a game of Name that Tune.
The split club was won by Jim Pritchard. Michaelena could not draw the Ace of Spades.
Paul introduced our speaker Christina Schweitzer who currently is the Director of Employment Services for the Salvation Army on Main Street.
The goal of the Salvation Army is to get people who have been struggling back into the work force.  In cases of those who have had long term unemployment job readiness training is necessary.  Employment counseling, job search, and the use of technology especially as it pertains to the making of resumes is used to help these people get employed.
Many local companies and educations facilities such as NCCC, Delaware North, West Side Ministries, TSA, Rich Products, the United Way, Key Bank, First Niagara, UB, and Canisius have offered their services and on the job training to help the Salvation Army in the  training of those who are in need.
In training these future employees the Salvation Army is trying to reach success, opportunity, education, and leadership for those people.  As usual it is nice to hear about the Salvation Army’s accomplishments.
Our meeting was adjourned at 1:30.

The Ken - November 2

It was nice of Paul to wait for Larry to get here before starting the meeting at 12:45. I was just glad to see there was food left. Pork tenderloin and green beans that were cooked to perfection. Of course we gave our Pledge and sang “God Bless America” started off by Bryden.
Gary gave our invocation with special prayers for my dad who entered into Hospice that morning. Dad passed away Wednesday. He suffered with Alzheimer’s and is now at peace.
Our guest today was Dick Earne from Grand Island. Dick told us that we were instrumental in Grand Island getting a Rotary Club.
Bryden announced he would like to have a quick charities committee meeting after today’s meeting. Scott also wanted to meet with his team to finalize Shred-It.
Jim Prichard was our fine master today. Jim proceeded to confess that he was quoted in the paper that the Riviera sold out Rocky Picture Horror Show in 1 hour. Ted confessed to celebrating his 50th birthday with Janel in Toronto at the Paul McCartney concert, Joe Starck was a bachelor for 2 weeks. He announced that Carol lost her credit card in Singapore but didn’t report it because the guy who stole it spent less than Carol. Larry confessed that it was great to have his friend Dick Earne here. They always pale around while at RI functions.
Jim tested us on our trivia of firsts. I forgot the significance of why firsts, but there was one.
We had fun and raised some doe rae me.
Our program today was Jim Prichard and myself. We want to kick start our representation on social media. I pledged to Jim that if he was putting his expertise and knowledge attracting people to our website, that I would make sure they landed on an updated, interesting site. RI has lots of media I can choose from to let the public know what they are up to. Jim suggest we all download the Flickr ap to our devices to show the public what we are up to locally. Flickr allows anyone in our club to upload images directly to our site. So visitors will see a slide show of Cradle Beach, operation Santa, sailing outings, golf events…you get the picture. Our username is Kenmorerotary@yahoo.com and Password is Chisolm1926. But stay tuned on that because I wasn’t able to log in. However we will get to the bottom of it.
Audrey suggest that we download the Clubrunner app from the app store. You use the same Clubrunner username and password to get on. I did, and it’s wonderful. It is like having the old roster in your pocket. I think we will be benefit with these implementations.
Thank you.
Jeff
