The Ken 8/23/2021

President Dick called the meeting to order at 12:20 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance. Ed Hacherl led us in prayer.

Announcements: Larry introduced Don Cyprus as a possible new member, whom he just recently met. Don gave us a little bio about himself, telling us he worked for 43 years as a county employee as a health inspector. That’s a mighty long career! Cameron told us about a clean up project at the Westminster Commons in Buffalo on September 18 that Evans Bank is working on and requested help. If you’re available and interested, please contact Cameron. Chuck noted that 2 people have signed up for the Boy Scout’s Golf Tournament on Monday 8/30. He would like 2 more people so they can complete a foursome. Please contact him or Dick. He also mentioned again about the America Rescue Plan for small businesses, making available $5000 to qualified businesses, with 20 or fewer employees. Application and information can be found at kentonchamber.org. Cathy mentioned that the Buffalo Gift Emporium is looking for non-profits. Honestly, I don’t remember what for, but if you’re interested in more information, please contact her at the Chamber.

Our speakers today were Dwight Lowe and Kim Fix from Home Beneath Our Feet, which is a nonprofit organization “geared towards providing our youth the platforms to become the best version of themselves through a gardening and holistic education initiative.” The children, ages 7-11, grow and harvest food, complete homework assignments and help clean up the community. They offer an after-school program during the winter months, where they provide a hot dinner meal twice a week, and the kids learn about indoor hydroponics and can receive help with homework. The cost is $25 per week per child. They hold fundraisers and apply for grants. If anyone is interested in helping, in any way, they are always looking. Please visit their website at www.Homebeneathourfeet.org or email Dwight directly at dwightlowe@homebeneathourfeet.org. There were a lot of great questions from our members and we learned quite a bit about this great organization.

Cameron won the split club of $20 (we had a nice attendance today), and Art drew the 2 of spades. Maybe next time, Art! Ed H. as fine master asked for confessions and Cameron confessed he watched the Bills win. Then Ed quizzed us on the Labor Day holiday, which was originally called “Labors Day Holiday”. Before it was passed, people in the late 1800s worked 7 days a week, 12 hours a day, even for kids as young as 5! The President that made it a federal holiday was Grover Cleveland in 1894. Very interesting information.

There was no formal end to our meeting, so we all enjoyed our lunches and parted ways. Due to the Boy Scouts Golf Tourney next Monday, I will be back at the gavel to run the meeting. Hope to see you all then! Have a wonderful rest of your week.
